Women's espadrille emerged in the Middle Ages, in Catalonia. They were popular among peasants because they were comfortable and affordable footwear, due to their low cost. Initially they were made of canvas, with straps attached to the feet. Its sole was made from espadrille fiber, found in great abundance in the Mediterranean region, from which the name espadrille, as it is known, comes from.
Its original production process was extremely complex, which required a craftsman to create braids, an espadrille maker to create rope soles and finally a seamstress to take care of the upper part and the fabric band. All this work was of great value, and resulted in espadrilles that were not only light but also flexible. Ideal for the climate and lifestyle of the population in that region.
After a few centuries, in the 40s, the great muses of cinema, with their influence, popularized the female espadrille . Actresses such as Grace Kelly, Lauren Bacall and Rita Hayworth surrendered to the elegance and sophistication of espadrilles .
This trend lasted between the 50s and 60s, when French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent realized the great potential in the classic women's espadrille and decided to reinvent it, thus creating a new version. He met with the Spanish manufacturer Castañer and commissioned a women's espadrille with an innovation: the heel. This made the espadrille return to the feet of celebrities.
During the 1970s, women's espadrilles remained in vogue, popular among the bohemian and hip elite. Casual and elegant, they perfectly complemented the caftans and flowing dresses of Saint Laurent's muses, which made these classic shoes an indispensable accessory in the women's wardrobe. Today, with the boho chic style, women's espadrilles are the perfect bet, as they combine with different looks, from basic to more sophisticated, maintaining style and elegance, without giving up comfort and lightness.
